As part of American 'economic restructuring' Iraq farmers are being forced, yup, forced to buy Genetically Modified Seeds. Further, they are no longer allowed to save any of their seeds for replanting and they must buy all of their seeds directly from US Corporations.
This is part of the US Admininstration's changes in their Intellectual Property Laws. After the invasion, Paul Bremer, the US Administrator of Iraq changed the laws that now force Iraqi's to buy only from the US.
The Iraqi people have been saving and replanting their own seeds for thousands of years and, currently, 97% of all Iraqi farmers have saved seed. Until now. Saving their seeds, according to the Americans is now illegal.
