The End Of The Internet As We Know It?
"...the future of the Internet -- depends on the telecommunications bill currently winding its way through Congress. Consumer advocates and progressives like Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA) are pushing for the telecom networks, which will be built using public rights-of-way, to provide universal, non-discriminatory access. The telecommunications companies (along with the cable giants) want to reserve the right to give preferential access to whomever has the most cash. Thus far, unfortunately, the industry is winning..."
The current expanse of the internet as we know it depends on a concept called NET NEUTRALITY, in other words, the net is open to all and is available for a myriad of agenda's and purposes. It's contents display a mulititude of interests and facts; lies and distortions; truth and untruth. You take your pick.
And that is the point. YOU decide on what you want to read and what you want to believe. Unlike the news media in Television and Newspaper, in which corporate and political interests have the dominate perspective on what stories will air and how they will be slanted. Journalism in print and broadcast tell you want they want you to know. In the internet, you make this decesion.
Clearly, in a world where control and subjugation are paramount, Corporate and Political interests cannot let this go unchallenged.
Without the free and accessible internet, we would not know of Bush's lies and hidden agenda's. We would not have access the the truth of corporate malfeasance, murder, and manipulations. We would not know about Global Warming; Peak Oil; Environmental disaster; Economic meltdowns; and corporate illegalities. We would not know the truth about Iraq and we would not be able to share information vital to our wellbeing and our very lives. Without a free internet the American people would know nothing about the truth of this world, only what our controllers want us to know.
What the U.S. Government and Corporate power want is to be able to control access and information for two purposes. 1) To achieve total control of the U.S. population. 2) Maximize profit.
"....Open, non-discriminatory access to the phone networks means businesses compete on the basis of what they do with the telephone network, not whether they can afford preferential access to it. The telecoms want to reserve the right to sell privileged access to their high-speed networks.."
For the coup de'tat in this country to be complete. That is, for Fascism or corporate control of our government to be complete, the internet as we know it must die. Corporations and politicians cannot have people sharing information without censorship because this would weaken their stranglehold on every man, woman, and child in this country.
As the internet dies, the hands around your throat will tighten. Believe it.

I wish you were right. However, 'the market'is not the solution. It is the problem. The 'market' is not a free and independent entity. The market is simply the reflection of choices made by huge corporate and political power in this country. There is no 'free' market.
Lets take this analogy, you are shopping in a Farmer's Market and are amazed at the variety and price of goods avaiable to you. You think, "wow, the market is good for everybody". The problem is, that major interests control who gets to sell at the Farmer's Market. Each little space must be approved by these interests. Corporate Power determines who gets to participate. In other words, it is the middle man that makes up the market. You have the vendor and the buyer and a middle man who puts them together in such a way as to maximize his own profit over the interests of the other two.
This middle man is the 'free market'.
I stand by my prediction, the internet is vulnerable to corporate and political control and the 'free market' is just a smoke screen.
Let me add one more point. A 'free Market' system can only work with the collusion of government. This is because corporate powers tend to seek to control the market. If government is honest, regulations and oversight are available to keep corporate power honest. However, when government is owned by corporations, then the regulations and laws are written soley to support corporate power at the expense of consumers and other businesses that do not have this clout.
The American government is wholly owned by corporate power. There is no free market.
